Walktune
Walktune is a radio-shaped device that lets people listen to the sounds and watch the landscapes of Astino valley(Bergamo, Italy) from the past. It encourages people to walk, explore, and reconnect with the hidden stories of this place through their own journey. In the past, Astino valley was a playground for children, a habitat for many species of owls, and home to monks living their spiritual lives. What if we could walk through and explore the Astino area, indirectly experiencing and learning about its past Through Walktune?

CIID and Orto Botanico collaborated to explore walking as a means of fostering thought, sensory awareness, and reconnection.
The Astino Valley(Bergamo, Italy), with its rich biodiversity, presents a unique opportunity to delve into life-centered innovation and to leverage nature as both an inspiration and a partner in the design of new experiences.
During this project, we explored new opportunities for immersive walking experiences that can be offered in the Astino Valley.

To gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between people, the Astino Valley, and nature, We conducted interviews and nature walks with a diverse group of experts from the Bergamo region. These included an ornithologist, an agronomist, a journalist, an environmental educator, a psychiatrist, and the former mayor of Bergamo (author of Green Pathday). By observing their unique ways of interacting with the environment and listening to their stories, We were able to gather profound insights crucial to the project. Additionally, it was fascinating to gain a glimpse into their walking patterns by analyzing maps of Bergamo

Nature's timelines vastly differ from ours, obscuring our influence and response. Being present with nature is not merely "slowing down," but actively tuning in and observing subtle changes.

We often forget we are part of nature, living in worlds of concrete and artificial light. When we visit forests, it's for a "dopamine hit," focused on self-gratification while ignoring our impact. This mindset leads to a desire to "prettify" nature, making changes to paths and spaces instead of learning to coexist.

“We are accustomed to concrete, to not having nature around our houses. So yeah, maybe they look just, coming here in Val d'Astino, they look for a window on nature, just a beautiful landscape, and they feel like a kind of drug. They want their doses of nature, they came here, they had their doses, and then for one week they are okay, and maybe the next week they need more of this drug called nature." - Giovanni Balio -

Following a brainstorming session driven by our three insights, we moved into the prototyping phase for three chosen ideas. Among them was Walktune. We then proposed these three prototype solutions to our client, Orto Botanico.

During the prototyping phase of Walktune, I explored the historical records of Astino Valley. The research revealed a multifaceted history: a 1970s children's playground, a monastic retreat, and a diverse owl habitat. Even my current studio at CIID had its origins as a stable. Uncovering these unexpected layers of history was a truly surprising and enlightening experience

Although the Astino Valley is vast, I proposed an initial walking route focused on historical landmarks surrounding CIID, while highlighting the significant potential for this path to expand in the future

The natural landscapes we inhabit are built upon numerous historical layers. However, these memories vanish over time if we do not actively listen to them. Understanding the historical relationship between humanity and nature is, in my view, the essential first step in inspiring people to take an interest in and become stewards of the natural world
