We conducted extensive research, including interviews and observations, to explore the relationship between elderly and art and culture. Through this process, they discovered that elderly people wish to deeply engage with art but face challenges such as physical fatigue, lack of seating, and fast-paced museum tours. As a solution, they designed an AI-powered, camera-like device that allows users to save artworks, access real-time information, and learn through personalized audio and visual guides. Additionally, the project considered the pre-visit, visit, and post-visit experiences, incorporating features like personalized navigation routes, AI guides, and digital booklets.

The goal of the project
The goal of the project
The goal was to design a product or service to enhance longevity and quality of life for the elderly from the perspective of art and culture.
As the first step of the project, we conducted mind mapping related to this topic, allowing us to identify key factors that should be considered in the relationship between the elderly, art, and culture. Through this process, we found the theme of accomplishment particularly interesting.

We hypothesized that seniors find a sense of accomplishment through the intellectual and emotional insights gained from art. To validate this, we interviewed elderly art enthusiasts and conducted field observations at Accademia Carrara (Bergamo) during a dance event for seniors with Parkinson’s disease. These interactions provided firsthand evidence of how engaging with art enhances their well-being, as reflected in the following quotes.
"Art keeps our minds active and provide a sense of purpose" by Isabella(75)
"I loved putting a pen in a child's hand for the first time and supporting them all the way till middle school" by Cettina(81)
"It is important to go to the museum and get passionate about art and culture from a young age" by Maria Grazia(76)
"I came here to move my body and relax", "I'm glad to meet the people I don't know" by someone who joined dance event at the museum

How might we create elderdly-friendly museum experiences that let art enthusiasts explore culture at their own pace and desired level of depth?

Based on the insights gathered from interviews and the 'How Might We' (HMW) questions defined for our design direction, we proceeded with ideation sketches. Our brainstorming focused on ideas that enable seniors to navigate museums or art galleries at their own pace and according to their interests, while providing opportunities for deep learning about specific artworks

We conducted testing with CIID faculty and art-enthusiastic seniors. Among the various concepts, the camera-shaped audio guide was the most popular. While ideas involving high-tech or novel interfaces caused confusion, the camera-shaped design felt familiar, allowing seniors to use it without any difficulty. This testing process highlighted the crucial importance of form factor
